That 2009 climate bill, the one that President Barack Obama couldn’t pass? It required the U.S. to cut greenhouse-gas emissions 17 percent by 2020 as compared with their all-time high. Yet last year, our emissions were down 21 percent. The same bill said that the U.S. had to generate 20 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2020. Last year, we met that target. We will surpass it in 2021.

De klimaatdoelstellingen? Een samenwerking tussen alle actoren in de wereld. Trump probeerde het actief tegen te werken en nog haalde de wereld doelstellingen die acht jaar daarvoor als te ambitieus werden gezien. Hoe komt dat? De auteur heeft deze theorie:

by feedback loop; it proceeds by a self-accelerating process that I have called “the green vortex.” The green vortex describes how policy, technology, business, and politics can all work together, lowering the cost of zero-carbon energy, building pro-climate coalitions, and speeding up humanity’s ability to decarbonize. The green vortex is what drove down the cost of wind and solar, what overturned Exxon’s board, and what the Biden administration is banking on in its infrastructure plan.

De uitdaging is ook helder op het eind:

AirTags zijn veruit het interessantste product uit de Keynote van gisteren. Hoewel veel voorbeelden gaan over sleutels, rugzakken en bagage, zie ik er heel andere mogelijkheden voor.

Zo delen wij hier thuis een fiets-met-kinderstoel, waarbij een iemand ‘s morgens naar school rijdt en daarna naar het station (allez, vroeger), en iemand anders die daar dan ‘s avonds oppikte om opnieuw langs school te passeren. Of de auto die ergens in de wijk geparkeerd staat.

Ik vraag me dan ook af in hoeverre de sensors gelinkt kunnen worden aan meerdere accounts, zodat zowel ik als mij vriendin onze auto kunnen terugvinden. (Niet dat die kwijt is, vooral dat die gedeeld is.)

De accessoires van Moment zijn dan ook degene die mij het meest intrigeren:

Het zit er jaren aan te komen, omdat het economisch (voor die groep clubs) zo logisch is als ‘t groot is. The New York Times:

Een serieus gemiste kans van UEFA om zoiets zélf niet te ondersteunen. Een soort NFL of Formule 1 van het Europees voetbal is toch iets om naar te streven? Als je dat dan ondersteunt en in eigen huis kan houden – voor zo ver die clubs daar überhaupt toe bereid zouden zijn – is net de enige kans om daar enige positieve effecten voor jeugd en lagere klassen in te voorzien.

Nu zijn ze gedoemd om er tegen te strijden, door bijvoorbeeld te zeggen dat elke speler die in zo’n Super League-ploeg speelt niét mag optreden voor zijn land tijdens een internationaal tornooi. Wat dubbel dom is, want dat maakt je tornooi minderwaardig, kijk maar naar het Olympisch tornooi.

Ik kijk ook met heimwee terug naar een tijd waarin KV Mechelen een Europese beker mee naar huis kon nemen. Maar dat is verleden tijd. Omarm de nieuwe tijd en zorg dat ook jeugd en lokale initiatieven daar de vruchten van plukken, anders doe je je werk gewoon niet.

Een artikel uit The Atlantic van februari dat tot nu redelijk on point is:

Beyond next winter, experts’ predictions are blessedly simple: Life in the warmer months of 2022 should be normal, or at least whatever qualifies as normal post-pandemic.

Dat we nog niet aan de nieuwe patatjes zijn.

Een element in het debat dat vaak ontbreekt, voor mij. Deze week ook in De Kamer de discussie of we nu wel of niet in het Europese peloton zitten qua vaccinaties. Terwijl in Brazilië en Afrika nieuwe varianten ontstaan.

Ik hoorde FVDB zeggen dat we vaccins besteld hebben voor een veelvoud van onze bevolking, dat we dus mogelijks een grote overschot gaan hebben. Ik mag hopen dat we die overschot gaan delen.
